Africa's biggest economy has crashed into recession

Africa's largest economy, Nigeria, has officially entered a recession following two consecutive quarters of contraction in the nation.

GDP shrank by 2.06% in the second quarter of 2016, following on from a 0.36% shrinking in the first quarter of the year, according to data released by the country's National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Wednesday.

Those two consecutive quarters of economic shrinkage mean that the country is now in its first recession in more than 20 years.

Recession in Nigeria may be an unwelcome development, but it is not unexpected. Earlier in the year, Godwin Emefiele, the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria warned that "recession was imminent," the Financial Times reports.

India's economy grew 7.1% in April-June quarter: ministry

India's economic growth slowed sharply in the first quarter of the 2016-17 financial year, missing expectations, official data released Wednesday showed.

Gross domestic product expanded 7.1 percent year-on-year in the three months from April-June, down from the stellar growth of 7.9 percent in the preceding quarter, according to the statistics ministry.

The numbers also fell short of economists' expectations, with most predicting a slight slowdown in GDP growth to around 7.6 percent for the quarter.

EU to break up within a decade due to immigration: Trump

US activist accuses President of being partial in anti-corruption war

Fresh Report Why Gov's Bank Account Freezed - Account Reportedly contained N1.2bn

A deposit of N500m was reportedly traced to the frozen bank account after the money was allegedly received from the ex-NSA office.

 



According to a report by Sahara Reporters, sources at anti-graft  commission revealed that Fayose's account was frozen in connection with over N1.2billion he allegedly got in 2014 from the National Security Adviser (NSA), Sambo Dasuki for his re-election campaign.

It was further reported that sources claimed Fayose received sums of money from the office of the NSA with which he bribed security officials and voters to get into the Ekiti governorship for the second time.

Oba of Benin dies

The monarch’s death was announced few minutes ago by the Iyase of Benin Kingdom, Chief Sam Igbe.

Prior to his death, the traditional ruler of Benin Kingdom in Edo State was reported to have been battling with an unknown illness, which started since last year.

Windows 10 now on mobile

Microsoft has introduced Windows 10 mobile operating software on its smartphones. The software is on Lumia 950 and 950 XL.

Introducing the phone to stakeholders in Lagos, the company said it was introducing the best it had to offer with the Lumia 950 XL and Lumia 950. This will be followed up with more affordable devices.

No more funding for medical trips abroad – Buhari tells government officials

The Federal Government said it has stopped providing resources to government officials to travel abroad for medical attention on cases that could be handled in the country.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 56th Annual General Conference and delegates meeting of the Nigeria Medical Association, NMA, in Sokoto, President Muhammadu Buhari, said his administration would not encourage expending hard earned resources on any government official seeking medical care abroad.

NLC demands N56,000 minimum wage from FG

The Nigeria Labour Congress has proposed a new minimum wage of N56,000 to the Federal Government.

The President of the NLC, Mr. Ayuba Wabba, said this while speaking with journalists in Abuja on today,  said that the labour body made the formal proposal to the Federal Government on Tuesday.

Wabba said that while it was a fact that the economy was in a bad shape, the law made it clear that a review of the minimum wage was overdue.

Buhari seeks World Bank’s help to revive economy

The Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer of the World Bank, Sri Mulyani Indrawati, held talks with President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja on Wednesday on how the bank could help Nigeria overcome an economic crisis caused mainly by a sharp fall in crude prices that has eaten deep into its oil revenues.

The Federal Government is planning to borrow N1.8tn from abroad and at home to help fund the over N6tn budget for this year, which has been delayed by several months due to wrangling between the Presidency and the National Assembly.

Although Nigeria has held talks with the World Bank over a possible loan or credit facility in recent months, Indrawati did not address this when speaking to reporters after the meeting.

Militants attack Fulani herdsmen, threaten to cripple Nigeria’s economy

The Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) has threatened to cripple Nigeria’s economy if President Buhari does not hold a Sovereign National Conference for Nigerians to choose whether they still want to stay together.

The militants also condemned the atrocities of the Fulani herdsmen, and criticised Buhari for not calling them to order.

The NDA, in a press statement titled: NIGERIA IS A FAILED ENTITY listed their grievances saying:

Ben Bruce - “Thank God for Sani Abacha”

Senator Ben Murray-Bruce has described late dictator, Sani Abacha as a visionary.

The senator also expressed gratitude to God over the money looted by Abacha.

“Thank God for Sani Abacha. In some way he was a visionary. In this time of scarcity, his money being returned to us is now our saving grace!” he wrote on Twitter on April 19, 2016.

His comment comes day after it was revealed that the US had agreed to return $480 million which had been stolen by the late dictator.

The decision was reached after a meeting between the US Department of Justice, the Attorney General of the Federation,Abubakar Malami and Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Chairman, Ibrahim Magu, The Nation reports.

“This is the largest loot ever traced to a former Nigerian public officer in the U.S. The DOJ, the AGF and the EFCC have concluded all the talks; we are in the process of repatriation of the $480million,” a source said.

Saraki’s lawyer nails EFCC as witness admits ignoring vital exhibits.

The prosecution witness in the ongoing trial of the President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, before the Code of Conduct Tribunal sitting in Abuja has admitted that some of the exhibits he tendered before the tribunal were not investigated by him nor his team.

While under cross-examination by Saraki’s lawyer, Kanu Agabi (SAN), the witness, Micheal Wetkas, an investigator with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, specifically admitted that he did not investigate the petitions in Exhibits 11, 12 and 13.

False Assets Declaration: Saraki arrives tribunal with just 4 Senators

The Senate President, Bukola Saraki just arrived the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, in company of just four Senators.

The Senators are Shaaba Lafiagi – Kwara North; Senator Kabiru Gaya – Kano; Senator Rafiu Ibrahim – Kwara South and one other Senator yet to be identified.

Saraki is currently standing trial for alleged false declaration of assets and other criminal charges which the Economic and Financial Crime Commission, EFCC, claimed was carried out while he was the Governor of Kwara State.
