The Lagos State Government says over N98.3 billion worth of property were salvaged while about N16.4 billion property were lost to various fire incidents from Jan. 1, 2015 to date.
The Commissioner for Special Duties and Inter-governmental Relations, Mr Oluseye Oladejo, made the disclosure at a news conference today in Alausa, Ikeja.
Oladejo said that over 1,667 emergency calls were responded to within the period.
He warned residents against the use of fireworks during the Yuletide, especially at this period of harmattan, saying it posed a great challenge and might lead to fire outbreak.
“It is important to state here that the Lagos State Police Command in December 2014 outlawed the use of fireworks because of its potential hazard to the people and the environment,’’ he said.
Oladejo said that the government was committed to the protection of lives and property of residents and therefore solicited the compliance, cooperation and understanding of all.
He also assured the residents of the readiness of the state police command to keep the state free of terror attacks, robberies and violence during the Christmas period and beyond.
He urged the residents to be vigilant, especially when in large gatherings such as religious programmes, carnivals, clubs, event centres and restaurants.
Oladejo appealed to religious bodies, club owners and event centres to work closely with the government and security agencies to monitor the activities around them and report suspicious and unusual activities.
He charged cinemas, casinos, restaurants and hotels among others to comply with standard practices of having more than one exit.
“Failure to comply with this directive will lead to closure of such places by the government,’’ he said.
